Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, Thundercats – HOOOOOO! Lion-O is in the building folks! After a long wait from SDCC 2015 where Mattel and the Four Horsemen revealed they’d obtained the Thundercats license – Thundercats Classic Lion-O is finally here. He is in scale and works with Masters of the Universe Classics figures, so if the line continues past this first wave you will finally be able to have a cross-universe battle between Eternia and 3rd Earth. We’ve done up 65+ pics of him after the break, read on to check the pics and see some quick thoughts.
Thundercats Classic Lion-O
Great sculpt head to toe
Paint is rich and colorful
Eyes have intricate paint
Rubber hands a tad weird
Belt Claw Shield difficult to get off
Peg on belt for Claw Shield snapped off
Chip in red paint in middle of belt while still in box
Overall – great figure. The sculpt is beautiful and it looks fantastic sitting on the shelf any way you pose it. There were some execution issues on mine, chipped paint specifically. The Claw Shield that attaches to the belt, very difficult to get off. When attempting to put back on, with care, peg on belt snapped. I’m aware warming things up helps etc – but I don’t think we should have to do that. Make it work without a lighter or boiling water, or don’t do it. Aside from that, he has a solid range of poseability and articulation very similar to MOTUC figures, so if you’re familair with them then you know what to expect here. Bottom line – awesome figure.
Now, this line has technically been cancelled. There are 7 total. The kittens came as SDCC exclusives. Lion-O, Panthro, Pumyra, Jackalman, and Mumm-Ra are coming in the subscription. Then it’s done. This is due to Mattel deciding to shut down MattyCollector.com right after signing this license. Mattel has given Super7 the rights to continue with MOTUC figures and they are working with Four Horsemen on it. Thundercats has an extra complication though as the property is owned by Warner Brothers. It would be nice if Warner would let this continue with Super 7 and 4H. Really nice. An alternative suggestion, given my limited knowledge of what’s actually going on and why – have Four Horsemen continue with sculpts, have DC Collectibles put it out via Diamond. They have the network and it’s their parent company’s license. Four Horsemen knows the factories if it can’t be moved to DCC’s facilities. I dunno, I’m not fully up on how the sausage gets made. All I know is I want more Thundercats sausage please. To all involved, work it out! Let’s not have 2 started and stopped classic lines in 10 years.
Back on a positive note, – check some key shots of this fantastic figure below, all 65+ after that!
