Overall
Berserk is an anime I’ve never watched. I noticed that Netflix had The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King available. So I decided to give it a watch after photographing the statue. I just wanted to familiarize myself a bit with the character. FYI: I enjoyed it. However, according to the packaging, this looks to be based on the Manga version, specifically the Retribution Ark: Lost Children (Volumes 14 – 16) comics. The look, however, is quite similar.
The statue comes packaged in a nice, standard box. The statue rests in a plastic tray. It requires some very minor assembly. You’ll need to attach the cape and the blade of the Dragonslayer sword. Most of it goes together quite easily. However, take care when putting the blade together. It’s an extremely tight fit. Once together, it’s fine, but I do recommend taking extra caution when assembling this piece. A backdrop, with instructions for assembly, is included as is a collectible card. Finally, there is an alternate head sculpt included.
The statue is a stunning display piece. The sculpting is extremely detailed throughout. Every dagger, every cut, ever spring is crafted with precision. The different surfaces, from skin, to metal, to cloth, are all handled differently with appropriate texturing. The statue base features a slain opponent and a severed head. It’s wonderfully gory. There’s a nice hidden feature within the pouch on his right hip. It opens to reveal a character hiding inside. As I’m not familiar with the manga, I’m not sure of the significance, but it is pretty to look at. The paint here is handled well. Most of the surfaces are cast in the correct color and paint is used to add weathering, blood, highlight and shadow details. Construction is solid overall. Some of the pieces could potentially be fragile due to the material used. However the instructions give tips on how to handle the statue to avoid breakage in those areas. I ran into no issues there.
In the end, this is a wonderful display piece. IF you’re a fan of Berserk and have the cash to spend, and the room to display, then this is an easy collectible to recommend.
